Visiting any church for the first time can feel intimidating—but we want you to know you are truly welcome here. Whether you’re exploring the Orthodox faith, returning after time away, or simply curious, Assumption is a place where you can come as you are, without pressure or expectation.
You’re welcome to join us any time on Sunday mornings. Earlier prayers begin at 8:45 AM, but most people arrive for the Divine Liturgy at 10:00 AM, which typically concludes around 11:30 AM. Services are mostly in English with select hymns and responses in Greek. Liturgy books with Greek phonetics are available to help you follow along.
You’re welcome to arrive at any time and sit anywhere. Most people dress modestly, in whatever helps them feel respectful and comfortable. Some stand for much of the service, others sit as needed. If you're not sure what to do, simply follow the lead of those around you or observe quietly.
You might notice people praying, lighting candles, kissing icons, or making the sign of the cross—these are expressions of love and reverence. You’re welcome to participate at your own pace, or just take it in.
Holy Communion is offered at every Divine Liturgy, but in the Orthodox Church, it is received only by baptized and chrismated Orthodox Christians who have prepared themselves through prayer, fasting, and participation in the sacrament of confession. If you are not receiving Communion, you are still welcome to come forward for a blessing or stay in the pew. At the end of the service, all are invited to receive blessed bread (called antidoron) as a sign of fellowship.
After the service, we warmly invite you to join us for coffee hour in the fellowship hall. This is a casual time to meet others, ask questions, or just enjoy being part of the community. If you’re comfortable doing so, please introduce yourself to our priest or someone at the welcome table—we’d love to get to know you.
